AI can now analyze biopsies more accurately than the human eyes

We automatically think of the brilliant brain when we hear about artificial intelligence. Above all else, artificial intelligence is the ability to process a large volume of data in a short period of time.

These skills will be particularly useful in medical imaging analysis, as we can build up a document base based on the examinations of animal or human tissue. This would be a huge library of high-definition pictures of organs at various stages of development, both healthy and infected.

The images from biopsy samples, which are tissue fragments that have been taken to be analyzed for confirmation or exclusion of pathology, were also added.

Artificial intelligence is good at comparing documents

In November 2024, a team of researchers from Washington State University, USA, released a study comparing the results of medical analyses (New Window), in which they submitted images taken during biopsy to both doctors and a deep-learning software.

Researchers are very formal. The caregivers take several hours to read the documents while the algorithm produces its results in just a few minutes. This is especially true when considering the time spent by doctors in discussions and how microscopes are handled.

Allowing doctors to focus on analysis

It is not the goal to replace doctors but rather to allow them to analyze the condition of a patient more accurately and quickly by providing a complete reading and analysis of their various medical exams. By detecting suspicious regions more accurately. Artificial intelligence can be used to compare documents and identify differences or anomalies.

These elements are brought to doctors’ attention for their interpretation. They can then make a diagnosis with an accurate view of the organ. Only one condition is required: a database of images that are sufficiently large, both in number of photos and the quality, for an AI model to be able to learn from.

The Washington State University researchers concluded that this AI application is particularly useful in detecting cancers and genetic diseases. The comparison of healthy samples with those suspected to have metastases and malformations can take place. A valuable decision aid for doctors when they are pressed for time.
