A small camera is placed on the counter and scans customers to determine their age. The camera uses artificial intelligence to estimate the age of the customer and shows a green or red light depending on whether the person is an adult. The artificial intelligence isn’t perfect. A 21-year old customer, for example was identified as a child by the camera on that particular day.

200 tobacconists equipped

Tobacconists are using this new technology to prevent minors from buying tobacco and gambling. Vendors can face fines of up to 750 euro. According to a tobacconist, “Youngsters who don’t have the age but know that we use this technology won’t show up because they’re aware we will ask for their ID card.” Around 700 euros is the price of the camera. This technology has been available in France for one year. Nearly 200 tobacconists have this device.
