These sums are staggering and represent the future of technology. OpenAI announced it had closed a fundraising round of $6.6 billion. This valued the company at $157 billion. It further solidified ChatGPT creator’s status as a Silicon Valley superstar and key player in artificial intelligence. The company announced in an statement on Wednesday, October 2, that “every week, over 250 million people use ChatGPT around the globe to improve their creativity, education, and work”.

According to Bloomberg, this fundraising has made OpenAI the third largest start-up in the world. It is now ranked alongside SpaceX (Elon Musk’s group for space exploration) and ByteDance (the Chinese entertainment company that owns the TikTok application). OpenAI’s ChatGPT, now synonymous with this type of service, launched the wave in generative AI at the end of the year 2022. This is a content production system based on everyday queries. Microsoft, Google, and Meta have all been offering tools that are designed to assist humans in their daily lives.

What future for the OpenAI  organization?

The company reached this major milestone, which was still secretive two years earlier, after an eventful year that saw the introduction of new AI models and numerous controversy. The Board of Directors of OpenAI sacked Sam Altman last November for his lack of transparency, and failure to pay attention to security concerns. In a matter of days, he was reinstated to his position as the head of OpenAI, with the support of Microsoft and the vast majority of its employees. Since May, the number of departures from top positions has increased.

OpenAI, founded in 2015, has a non-profit organization status and should be doing its best to serve humanity. Bloomberg reports that the company could alter its non-profit status to concentrate more on profit while still benefiting society through its scientific advancements. OpenAI released o1 in mid-September. It is a new type of AI that can answer more complicated questions and reason, especially mathematical ones. OpenAI aims to create “general AI”, i.e. Artificial intelligence, but like that of human beings.
