A small camera placed on the counter scans customers and determines their age. The device uses artificial intelligence to estimate the age of the customer. It displays green if they are over 18 and red if below 18. The AI-based technology isn’t perfect. A 21-year old customer, for example was identified as a child by the camera on that particular day.
The new technology will be put to the use of tobacconists who cannot sell tobacco or gambles to minors. Vendors can face fines of up to 750 euro. According to one tobacconist, “Young people know we have the technology but are not old enough. They don’t want to come in because they’re aware that we will ask for their identity card.”
The camera is sold in France since the last year at a price of 700 Euros. Nearly 200 tobacconists now have the latest technology.
