  • Duizenden artiesten klagen inbreuk op auteursrechten door AI aan, waaronder Bjornulvaeus van ABBA, Harlan Coben en Julianne Moore

Over 11500 artists, including actors, musicians, and writers, have signed the petition published Tuesday, 22 October 2024. The petition raises the alarm over the use of artificial intelligence algorithms (AI). Amongst them are Thom Yorke from Radiohead, Bjornulvaeus from ABBA and Julianne Moore.

In one sentence, the authors of a petition still available for signatures assert that “unauthorized use of artworks as training material for generative artificial intelligent is an unjust and major threat to livelihoods and should not be permitted”.

Hollywood’s major studios are using artificial intelligence to revive dead stars, create images of extras for battle scenes, or help with scriptwriting. American actors like Kevin Bacon, Sean Astin and Julianne Moore (Sam Gamegie from The Lord of the Rings) are among the best.

Music and literature are also facing similar challenges. Songs and stories can be generated by generative artificial intelligent, based on simple queries in common language.

According to the Guardian a British newspaper, Ed Newton-Rex was the person who started this petition. This latter claim claims that copyrighted data is used by specialist companies without payment to create new algorithms. They denounce a ‘dehumanizing’ for artists.

“Large-scale systematic theft”

Thom Yorke (The Cure), Bjornulvaeus (Jamiroquai), Max Richter, John Rutter or Robert Smith have all signed on the side of musicians. On the writer side, Nobel Prize-winning KazuoIshiguro has signed it, as have best-selling thriller author Harlan Coben and Madeline Miller. James Patterson also did so.

The world’s most famous authors were the focus of attention last year.

Last month, several Hollywood stars, including Pedro Pascal, Jane Fonda, and Mark Hamill, endorsed legislation that would have framed AI in California. This was blocked by California Governor Gavin Newsom. Some have decided to work together. Meta (Facebook Instagram WhatsApp) and actor Casey Affleck announced last week a collaboration with horror film studio Blumhouse to test AI powered movie-generating software.

The historic 118 day Hollywood strike, led by SAG and AFTRA actors over a year ago included a demand to protect actors from AI.
